Electrochemical Conversion and Storage Systems for Mobile Propulsion Systems ECS
The worldwide energy crisis and the advancing climate change make a rethinking of energy conversion and storage inevitable, especially in the mobile sector. Especially the topics of hydrogen and electrification of the energy market play a crucial role in this context and have become a main part of the political discussion. The TME will therefore offer the new lecture "Electrochemical Conversion and Storage Systems for Mobile Propulsion" (ECS) starting in the upcoming summer semester 2023.
The lecture deals primarily with the use of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells and batteries in vehicle applications. The fuel cell system described first, focusing initially on the fuel cell stack with the individual components of the membrane electrode assembly (proton-exchanging membrane, catalyst and gas diffusion layer) and the bipolar plate. Subsequently, the subsystems of the fuel cell system are discussed, which are used for gas supply and conditioning of the reactants (air and hydrogen) as well as for cooling of the fuel cell stack and the auxiliary components. Finally, the topics of fuel cell degradation and system control are covered.
In a fuel cell electric vehicle, the use of a buffer battery is mandatory. The concepts of how such a combination of fuel cell and traction battery can be implemented in the vehicle are therefore first presented. Subsequently, cell chemistry and battery pack design will be discussed more detailed. Finally, degradation and the battery management system will be discussed.
