Content
The lecture initially covers different fuels as energy suppliers. The observation of thermodynamic processes with the help of standard cycles and detailed process analysis gives information about the energy transformation in the engine. Basic mechanisms of the heat transfer are presented and building on those, methods of calculation for the heat flow and heat stress in combustion engines are reviewed.
The derivation of similarity laws and specific values allows the layout of combustion engines and the estimation of performance limits. The duties, building types and dynamic processes of valve trains are dealt with in a further section whereat references to the construction are given. Building on the content of the lecture, the requirements on the constructional element as well as the design of the cooling and lubrication system are derived.
