Content

This lecture deals with the series development process of transmission for passenger cars and light-duty vehicles. Conventional and modern fully electric drives are covered. First, today’s most common transmission types as well as electric drives and e-machines are introduced. Besides the basic functions, special design features as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each concept are explained. This is followed by a detailed look at the development process of transmissions from the concept to series maturity.

By the example of a dual clutch transmission, the conventional calculation and design process is introduced with respect to the use of modern engineering tools and targeting economic large-scale production. Further on, other important topics in a series development such as transmission controls development, calibration and testing are parts of this lecture.

At the end of the lecture the role of transmissions in the context of electrification is considered. The technical realization of several transmissions for hybrid vehicles are presented in advance of the fully electric drives, covering the inverter, e-machine and transmission. Afterwards the particular challenges coming along with the electrification of the powertrain are discussed.

In the first lecture some basics are taught which enable also students without prior knowledge of vehicle longitudinal dynamics to participate in this lecture.
