Information regarding Examinations

To ensure equal opportunities for all candidates during an examination, the following are not allowed as aiding tools:

  • alphanumerical calculator, i.e. gadgets that are able to depict the complete alphabet on their display,
  • calculators, which are programmable in a high-level language e.g. BASIC, FORTRAN, etc.
  • calculators that can be programmed in general, and
  • calculators that offer the possibility to save or depict formula and/or diagrams.

The use of such calculators during the examination will be graded as attempted cheating and lead to a failure of the examination.

Also forbidden are ready-to-receive mobile phones and other devices such as MP3-players, smartwatches, etc. The use of such devices as well as any phone ringing, this also counts for alarms or such, will be graded as attempted cheating and lead to a failure of the examination.

An attempted cheating leads to a failure of the examination. Furthermore, the right to an oral re-examination is lost.

Approved tools are:

  • the formulary given by the institute,
  • compasses, rulers and writing instruments as well as
  • pocket calculator that complies with the guidelines.

Do not write in red or green. You may write with a pencil.

The test location and the lecture hall distribution are announced in the RWTHmoodle.

All examinations must be accompanied by a student card or photo ID e.g.ID card, passport, driving license.

FAQ-List

How do I log into the RWTHmoodle Room as a Master’s or Erasmus student?

Please send an E-Mail with your matriculation number to our or to the responsible lecture / exercise supervisor.

Am I allowed to arrange additional consultation hours?

Yes, if required, an additional consultation hour with the lecture / exercise assistants may be arranged.

What kind of calculators may be used during exams?

On campus/RWTHmoodle, we refer to a positive-list regarding calculators. Calculators that are not on this list, need to be tested by the audit assistants. A request concerning this matter should be made one month prior to the exams.

Will my former, ICEF related academic achievements from abroad be recognized at the RWTH Aachen University?

Often the topics regarding “energy conversion machines” are differently covert abroad than here. Thus, in individual cases, an equivalence test regarding the content is necessary. For this purpose, we need the following information: lecture scripts / slides, a table of contents of the lecture, written records, or equivalent material.

Is there any possibility to have an oral or separate written exam before the XX.XX.XX? I need to be back at my home university by the XX.XX.XX, which is before the examination will be held.

No. Examination dates cannot be arranged, they are set by the RWTH University.

Is it possible to cancel an exam at the TME institute?

Students can cancel their registration in the RWTHonline system until the cancellation deadline (3 days before the exam).

Information: In RWTHmoodle, it will say that you did not arrive to the examination. This information is explicitly irrelevant regarding your account, as long as your cancellation at the examinant office is rule-consistently.

Is it possible to attend the ICE-T/E lecture and take part in the examination although I haven’t participated in ICE-D/M?

Yes, the participation of ICE-T/E (lecture and examination) is possible without having attended to ICE-D/M, since the topics of ICE-T/E are not directly based on those of ICE-D/M. However, fundamentals form MPF are expected.

Is the small group exercise an obligatory date?

No, the attendance during small group exercises is optional.

Is it possible to use old prints of the lecture script?

Generally speaking, only the issues that are dealt with in the current lecture script are relevant for examination. The thoroughness of old scripts cannot be guaranteed. Thus, the use of old script is at one’s own risk.

Do the students, which participate the ICEF exam the third time (Minister), receive the results earlier than the date which has been announced in the RWTHmoodle?

No, the Minister don't receive their results ealier.

Is there any possibility to extend the process time of a bachelor or master thesis?

The student can informally request an extension of two weeks at the ZPA. This application does not need any approval by the head of institute or the like.

Another extension of

  • two weeks for the bachelor’s thesis (all in all for weeks maximum)
  • four weeks for the master’s thesis (all in all six weeks maximum)

can only be requested through a new proposal to the audit committee. Please note the deadlines! For this further extension, a written endorsement by the internally supervising professor or head of institute is necessary (also for external theses).

It is important that the letter states the student’s innocence regarding the extension. The letter is submitted by the student via mail, fax, or personally (delivered to the “red mailbox”, Kackertstr. 9, 3rd floor) and it is addressed to the audit committee. The letter will be sent back via mail to the given address; the ZPA automatically receives a copy.

  • A further extension beyond the second one automatically leads to a failed thesis. This also applies to cases of illness. There is the possibility to file a special application to the audit committee against this decision, which needs to be summited at least seven days before the next meeting of the audit committee (dates are publicly accessible).
